Windows 8.1 is up to date with automatic updates, the WD NAS server firmware is up to date and I downloaded the later WD software before installing it. I disabled power saving on the My Book Live to eliminate any potential problems. I can access the NAS drive via the WD Dashboard in the web browser via its IP number and access all functions. All these functions work on the Windows 7 Toshiba. It does not show up as a media device in Windows Explorer, only the Windows 8.1 media server I can access the NAS drive by typing in the IP number in Windows Explorer, but it does not show it as a network computer and cannot find it as \\MybookLive at all. I can see the Toshiba laptop on the LAN and share files with it from the HP (and my wife's Acer laptop running Windows 7 Pro). However, when I tried to connect to the drive from my HP Proliant running Windows 8.1 Pro it does not "see" the drive. The NAS server is assigned a fixed IP number by the DHCP server in the D-Link ADSL router. I could back up and copy files to the drive. The setup went fine and I could connect to the NAS drive from my Toshiba laptop running Windows 7. I bought a Western Digital My Book Live 1TB and connected it to my home network via an Ethernet cable.
